Paying for MHD ZEVs in Washington State - Event Wrap Up!
PNWER RIA hosted one of our first in-person events on Thursday, April 27, 2023, where leaders, experts, and stakeholders came together to discuss Washington State’s most recent legislative session and how different sectors are preparing for the Medium- and Heavy Duty Vehicle transition to Zero Emission technologies.
Building from last year’s work on Drayage Decarbonization, PNWER RIA has identified three main challenges to decarbonizing the medium- and heavy-duty (MHD) vehicle sector:
Affordability and Accessibility
Can drivers, fleets, and operators access and afford to purchase zero emission medium and heavy-duty zero emission vehicles (MHD ZEVs)?
Zero Emission Refueling Infrastructure Availability
What will it take to build out zero emission refueling infrastructure, including electrification and hydrogen refueling technologies?
Does the electric grid have enough transmission and capacity to refuel MHD ZEVs?
Workforce Development & Reskilling
Do we have the workforce to service, maintain, and operate these new technology vehicles?
How are we planning to reskill and train the existing workforce of drivers, mechanics, electricians, and more?
This in-person event explored these themes and more. Given the Washington State Legislature’s recent creation of a MHD ZEV incentive fund, this timely discussion provided participants information needed to plan for a wholistic, equitable transition to MHD ZEVs - especially for independent owner-operator drivers.
